DAY 1: MOSHI TO NALEMORU GATE RONGAI, TREK TO 1ST CAVE CAMP
The NaleMoru community is visited by a guide and porters who lead a meandering road through cornfields and pine groves. The first night's camp is located in First Cave, 2,600 meters above sea level, with a toilet and wooden benches. Water is available a little further down the hike, immediately below First Cave.
DAY 2: TREK FROM 1ST CAVE (2600M) – KIKELEWA CAVE (3600M)
Habitat: Moorlands
The track ascends towards Kibo, passing Second Cave (3450m) and arriving at Kikelwa Cave at 3600 meters. The vistas open up and the mountain looks enormous. Water can be found in the visible stream below the cave, but it may require going downhill to reach it. Overnight stay at the third cave camp.
DAY 3: TREK FROM KIKELEWA CAVE (3600M) TO MAWENZI TARN CAMP (4330M)
A short but challenging hike through grassy hills provides stunning vistas of this natural setting. The vegetative zone terminates just before reaching Mawenzi Tarn, which is magnificently positioned beneath Mawenzi's towering spires. Spend the day settling down and visiting the surroundings.
DAY 4: HIKING FROM MAWENZI TARN CAMP (4330M) TO KIBO HUT (4700M)
Habitat: Alpine desert.
Climb Kibo's east slope, cross the Mawenzi-Kibo saddle, and arrive at Kibo Hut in 4-5 hours. Rest up for the last ascent, which begins after midnight. Kibo Camp will be your temporary home for the night.
DAY 5: KIBO HUT (4700M) – UHURU PEAK (58950M) – HOROMBO HUT (3720M)
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit.
The trek begins with a rough track that leads to the Hans Meyer Cave (5150m) and then zigzags up to Gillman's Point (5 681m). Snow is typically experienced all the way up to Africa's highest point, Uhuru Peak (5895m). The length of time to photograph on top is controlled by the weather before the 3-hour descent to Kibo Lodge. After a short respite, the climbers gather their climbing gear and descend (3 hours) to Horombo hut, where they will spend the night.
DAY 6: HOROMBO HUT (3720M) – MARANGU GATE (1980M)
After breakfast, climbers descend 6 hours to the Marangu gate, where they sign their name and details in a register and receive summit certificates. Climbers who reach Gillman's Point (5685m) receive green certificates, while those who reach Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates. The Marangu stroll takes climbers back to Moshi accommodation.
