volcanoes rwanda"In the heart of Central Africa, so high up that you freeze more than you sweat," legendary primatologist Dian Fossey explained, "there are large, prehistoric volcanoes reaching around 15,000 feet, and nearly covered with dense, green rainforest - the Virungas."

The steep slopes of this spectacular mountain range, which is home to the endangered mountain gorilla and a complex mosaic of montane ecosystems such as evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, marsh, and health, are preserved in Volcanoes National Park, located in the far northwest of Rwanda.

Volcanoes National Park is named after the extinct volcanoes of the Virunga Massif, which include Karisimbi, the grandest at 4,507m, Bisoke with its emerald crater lake, Sabinyo, Gahinga, and Muhabura.

Tracking endangered mountain gorillas through the secret intimacy of the rain forest, filled with the sounds of 200 different species of colorful birds and the chattering of the rare golden monkey, is one of the most unique experiences in the area.

Both Buhanga Eco-Park, an ancient forest with some of Rwanda's most remarkable stories, and Musanze Caves, formed 62 million years ago after the most recent estimated volcanic eruption, are located inside Volcanoes National Park.

Hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, tracking gorillas, and local excursions appeal to all interests.
