akageraThe plains of Akagera are relatively warm and low-lying, with grassland, woodland, marsh, and a dozen lakes. The normally open terrain is excellent for animal watching. A family of South African lions has settled there and is reproducing well, while 18 eastern black rhinos have also been reintroduced. There are also buffalo, elephants, antelope, zebras, giraffes, baboons, monkeys, 490 bird species, and much more to be seen.

A boat excursion on Lake Ihema, with its large pods of hippos, Nile crocodiles, and numerous waterbirds on the island in the center of the lake, is also a must-do when visiting Akagera.

The park may only be reached by automobile, either with a tour operator or independently. Individual parking places in the National Park's automobile are available for nighttime trips.

It is strongly encouraged to hire a guide, which can be arranged via the park.

Sleeping within the park is available at many lodges, at a bush camp in the north during specific seasons, or by camping in permitted places.
